SITE DEMOLITION

Demolition continues to evolve as a business unit. At Belair, our Demolition Business Unit has the latest in state-of-the-art equipment.  Our personnel are highly trained and we maintain our professionalism and expertise through continuing education classes. A strong emphasis is placed on recycling materials and the reuse of salvageable material.  Through material segregation, we are able to reduce or eliminate debris that is deposited in landfills. Belair closely works with State and Federal agencies to continually update our understanding of changes in regulations.

A typical concern in today’s marketplace is continuity of service and quality.  Current economic conditions have led many contractors to attempt projects in new areas of business.  Please be assured that our firm was built over many years of repeat business from public and private owners who continue to rely on the expertise of our managerial and field staff.  At Belair, our unique LEAN™ management practice allows us to continuously improve our service and to eliminate waste on even the most complex projects.

SOLUTION EXAMPLES

Demolition of a former church and an attached educational building. The structure was approximately 40 feet tall and situated within 20 feet of occupied buildings and a highly congested street. The building footprint was relatively large and originally constructed with a variety of structural methods including steel, pre-stressed concrete, masonry block walls and architectural timbers. Vehicle and pedestrian traffic were managed and protected during the demolition.

  • Concrete and steel materials segregated from the waste streams for recycling.

  • Sheetrock, lumber and nonstructural brick routed to a demolition landfill.

  • 5,700 tons of concrete and 1,600 tons of steel was salvaged for recycling.

  • 1,200 tons of building debris segregated and sent to a demolition landfill.

The owner of this project utilized a compilation of Belair’s services (Demolition, Earthwork, Environmental and Utilities) for the construction of a new retail space.

A highlight of this project was the demolition of a 97,000 square foot building originally constructed of engineered wood beams and pre-stressed concrete panels. The original structures on this site were constructed of environmentally friendly building materials.  The storage buildings were constructed of corrugated metal and steel frames. The asphalt throughout the site was reclaimed and reused for base rock for the proposed parking lot. The main building was constructed of pre-stressed concrete panels, engineered lumber and concrete flooring.  Approximately 85% of the main building was sent off-site and salvaged for recycling. During construction Belair offered value engineering, proposing a below grade storm water retention system instead of the planned storm water retention pond, adding additional vehicle parking space to the future retail site.

Belair begins every project with a sound estimate of costs and schedule.  Belair utilizes a trusted group of subcontractors and has developed long standing accounts and relationships with many local and national product suppliers.  Using quality subs and vendors assures us that every project starts on a solid foundation.
